We be will using a blog, (basically a web log) as a journal/portfolio for this course. I will be posting Journal entries for you to comment on as well as assignments and deadlines for projects.

For your first assignment is to read Chapter 1 & 2 in the text ART & FEAR. Please comment on Journal #1 due Wednesday September 12, 2012 by 11:00am. You will also need to bring a copy of your schedule to class.

Journal #1
Choose two of the following questions to respond to.  Please check you spelling and write in complete sentences. Be ready to discuss your ideas in class.
  1. What are some of the universal and familiar difficulties (personal fears) you face as an artist?
  2. The Assumptions - Take one of the assumptions from below and consider your relationship to it. How does the assumption relate to your feelings and thoughts toward artmaking?

    • Artmaking involves skill that can be learned.

    • Art is made by ordinary people.

    • Making art and viewing art are different at their core.

  3. Definition/Identity of artist has drawbacks and benefits. What does labeling yourself as an artist do for you or not do for you personally? What does labeling yourself an artist do or not do for you as others view you?
  4.  On page 13, a list of doubts is listed.  What are some of your doubts that aren't on the list?  Please give 2 doubts and an explanation behind them.
  5. Making art is chancy. What is required to succeed?

2.) Artmaking involves skill that can be learned because if making art was not a learned skill, it would be impossible to improve. Those with inborn artmaking talents would be masters from birth with no concept of change or failure. It is through our failures, not necessarily successes, that we are able to grow as artists. By trying and failing, we are able to better understand how we work and what we are doing. Unfortunately, just because someone understands and agrees with the theory of improvement via failure does not mean that they believe it applies to their work.

5.) To succeed as an artist requires perseverance. You need to be willing to push through the hard times to get the job done and never give up no matter how many times you may be turned away. An artist must also be firm in their own beliefs so as not to falter in their path to becoming the artist they want to be.

    4) There are many doubts artist’s face sometime throughout their careers. One may be that they are scared to try, due to the possibility of not making any profit from their art. If you are creating artwork and no one likes it enough to buy it, you have potentially failed yourself. Another doubt would be living your whole artistic life in a lie. Being told by everyone around you that your work is great and meaningful to them, but then when it comes to whether or not you’re an known artist, you have nothing to show for yourself.

    5) What is needed to be a successful artist is a tolerance for uncertainty. In your journey to becoming a successful artist there’s going to be some rough times full of controversy and times of questioning yourself. It’s the way you decide to deal with these problems that will make or break you. Keeping your head held high and your eye on the prize will allow you to stay focused and determined on accomplishing your goals as an artist.

    4) Although I have many doubts that could be added to the list of doubts any artist could have the two that I would add are; Have I already used this design? and Will I convey the message that the consumer of my graphic design business wants me to convey for them? With my dream of owning my own graphic design business it's hard to know exactly what a consumer is thinking and you don't want to use a design that has already been used.

    5) Since art is chancy the tolerance for uncertainty is the prerequisite to succeeding in an environment that is ever changing. This means keeping up with what the lastest "popular" item and making it your own with your own "spin" to it. This also means keeping your goals in sight while staying true to yourself as an artist.

1)Some of the difficulties people face as artists are that no one will like their artwork, when you don't like your own work, not being able to get it to look like the image you have in your head. One difficulty I face and worry about the most is that nobody will like what I'm making or nobody will understand it. It is fun sometimes to see what someone thinks of your art and it's different from what you saw, but then you end up liking their vision more than you like your own.

    2) Making art and viewing art are different at their core because when you are making art you get to choose what it is going to look like. When you are viewing art you are trying to see it the way the person who made it sees it and you're also trying to see it from your own point of view. Sometimes the two are completely different and sometimes they are almost the same it just depends on the way you see things, everyone sees life and art differently which is what makes art even more fun.

    2) Art viewing and art making can go hand in hand but could also be the worst of emnemies. When you are creating an art piece, knowing what you want it to be can come from studying other art or from nature which is also concidered art. But viewing it can also make you want to make the piece perfect and some pieces are better not perfect then to the exact detail.

    5) Art can be chancy because everyone can view your art differently, meaning that there will be good comments and bad comments as well. You need a thick skin and a strong heart to be an artist because some of the things people will say about your art will not always be plesent. Determination is another good trait to have because if you give up you and your art will never gain and progress.

    1) One of the most difficult things for an artist to avoid is comparing themselves to others. Though friendly competition can be beneficial, constantly comparing skill levels or styles to those of others can be harmful to an artist’s self-esteem. Many begin to question themselves. This is something that you have to let go of. Your art is your own. Stay true to yourself and your own way of creating.

    5) In order to succeed in making art you should always be open to improvement and suggestion. If you are willing to put yourself and your work out there for judgment, you can gain opinion from an outside source and grow. It is very chancy, and sometimes you feel like you’re being attacked by critiques. Success is pushing past the negative and seeing the reality that this is only to help you revise and improve. Once you master listening to others, you can truly succeed.

  7. 4. Another doubt could be lack of experience. Lacking experience could be a big factor for quality if you were designing something that had specific guidelines. I gives a person doubt in themselves which gets rid of confidence. Also uncertainty would create a lot of problems. If you think you have something right but are not sure you might be tempted to change it or fix it, which could either be good or bad. It would make you second guess yourself instead of being happy and confident with your work.

    5. What makes art hard to be successful in is that many people have different opinions. Some people prefer different types of art than others. Being able to sense that and create something that many would have the same opinions on is what would make you successful.

    1) One of the fears I face as an artist is that nobody will accept any of my art. I realize that not much of my art will be popular but to be completely and utterly rejected would be a lot to handle. Another fear of mine is that I wont have any support from family or friends. No support from anyone would be very depressing from me and it would probably break me as an artist.

    3) Labeling myself as an artist doesn't effect my personality but instead is my personality. Labeling myself as an artist as viewed by others kind of sets me apart. Artists tend to be viewed as strange or different and most society doesn't seem to understand them. However, labeling myself as an artist also opens up a new community of artists and creative people that is so tight knit that it feels like a family.

    1. I struggle with believing in my talents. It always seems like someone is more talented or more creative.

    5. I believe with what the reading says. Vision, Knowledge of materials, and uncertainty are things that artists must have. To create, you must have a vision. To execute the vision, you must be able to control materials. And to keep moving forward, an uncertainty must be present as you are working.

    1. I fear they people might not understand my art work and I also fear if they dont like it either. If I find out that they dont like my art work I would change my art work and make it better.

    2. Making the art work is different then viewing the art work because you wont get the same experience as that artist did when he/she made the art work. You can try to ask the artist if why they decided to make their art work they maybe tel you why they did.

    1. I am afraid that people accept me as an artist, im afraid they will look at my work and scoff at how poor it is.

    2. When a person makes they need a vision in doing so,because one does not simply just go out and make art unplanned. They use materials. Weather it be a little and few, or lots in large quantity, and all the art that they do is done for a reason.
